  • Scott founded and directs The Inspiration Project, a volunteer literacy program for adults with developmental disabilities. 


  • A passage from Scott's novel, Tourmaline, has been painted on the wall of the Mineralogical Museum on the Island of Elba​.


  • Scott and her family lived in Florence, Italy, for two years. In the spring of 2025, Scott launched a new Creative Writing program based primarily in Florence, for students from the University of Rochester. 

  • The family adopted their dog, Petey, in 2004.  He had survived through the winter on his own, in the streets of Rochester. He went on to live happily in the family for 18 years. He is the protagonist of James Longenbach's poem, "One Last Thing."


  • Scott volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician for three years in the 1980s.


  • Scott's novel, Follow Me, was reviewed on the front page of the New York Times Book Review.


  • Season 13, Episode 17 of Criminal Minds opens with a quote by Joanna Scott.

  • Joanna Scott's play, "Speakeasy," was produced by the Todd Theater Troupe at La MaMa and toured fringe festivals around the world.​


  • Scott is a founding board member of the literary press Open Letter.
